One person died and a sheriff’s deputy was wounded in an exchange of gunfire in north-central Minnesota on Sunday.
The shooting happened in Cass County, east of Walker.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said it received a 911 call just after 4:30 p.m. reporting gunfire near homes in the area of Onigum Road Northwest and Old Agency Drive.
“Deputies arrived in the area and initiated an investigation. A short time later, deputies attempted to make contact with a male subject who was walking in the 8000 block of Onigum Road NW,” the sheriff’s office reported in a news release. “The male subject fled on foot from deputies and a foot pursuit ensued.”
At some point during that pursuit, the sheriff’s office said, there was an exchange of gunfire.
The person being sought by deputies died at the scene. A deputy was wounded in the upper right thigh and airlifted to a hospital in Fargo. In an update late Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said the deputy had been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The names of those involved have not been released. The sheriff’s office said body-worn cameras “were utilized and active in this incident.”
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation. The agency said BCA agents and crime scene personnel were at the scene on Sunday evening.
