A 13-year-old student at Horizon Middle School has been charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance.

The arrest occurred after a fellow student reported the juvenile had an extensive drug collection to school staff, who then notified local law enforcement.

Moorhead police found 1,500 blue pills containing fentanyl per a field test. Samples have been sent to a lab to find out just how much fentanyl is in the pills. The teen has been brought to the West Central Juvenile Detention Center.

“We will continue our investigation to determine where these drugs came from and how they came to be in the possession of a 13-year-old child,” Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick said. “We will also hold those accountable who are found to be connected.”

Helmick also said random K-9 checks will be conducted at both Horizon Middle School and Moorhead High School going forward to prevent similar incidents.

“For anyone who thinks they'll be able to bring illegal narcotics into the schools, please know this: you will be caught,” Helmick said.

He confirmed one of the teen’s parents is cooperating in the investigation.
