A protest of the Trump Administration's immigration enforcement actions drew around 200 people to the Lake Street-Marshall Avenue bridge between Minneapolis and St. Paul Wednesday afternoon.
Organizers of the protest said they wanted to show solidarity with similar demonstrations in Los Angeles, where President Trump has deployed the California National Guard and Marines over the objections of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
"I think it's important that people see that we're standing in solidarity with them, and that we're not going to take what Trump is doing to people in L.A.,” said Loretta van Pelt of Minneapolis. “We know it's going to come here."
Carol Duling of St. Paul waved an American flag from the sidewalk as drivers honked their horns in support.
"As a patriotic American, I have serious concerns about the way the country is heading with militarization, turning in to a police state," Duling said.
Duling added that she plans to attend a larger demonstration at the Minnesota Capitol on Saturday to coincide with President Donald Trump's military and birthday parade in Washington.
Demonstrators did not block traffic. Several Minneapolis police officers watched from their squad cars about a block from the west end of the bridge but did not engage with protesters.
