Live music by the lake

Jeanne O’Melia, who lives on Lake Vermilion, makes her way to Cook, Minn., every Wednesday evening — often by boat — to enjoy the free live music at the gazebo downtown. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. In the event of rain, concerts move indoors to the VFW.

The music runs from 6–8 p.m. on Wednesdays throughout the summer. Next week, central Minnesota cover band JustUs takes the stage. On July 30, Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame inductee Keith Secola performs.

Brush up your Shakespeare

Voice-over actor Judy Schumacher of St. Paul looks forward to seeing The Gray Mallard Theater Co.’s free Shakespeare-at-the-pub performance of “Much Ado About Nothing,” staged in the parking lot of Sociable Cider Werks in northeast Minneapolis. This year marks the company’s fourth season.

The adaptation runs under two hours, including an intermission. Food and beverages are available on-site. Shows begin Thursday and run through Aug. 3, with performances on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 7 p.m. Attendees should bring their own chairs.

Hands-on clay and competition

Musician Clark Machtemes of Waconia encourages people to check out the Minnesota Pottery Festival in Hutchinson. The event features more than 40 juried potters from Minnesota and neighboring states, along with pottery demonstrations, children’s activities and local food vendors.

The festival will be held July 26 and 27 at Masonic West River Park along the Crow River.

Machtemes recommends participating in the Pottery Olympics, where amateur and professional potters go head-to-head in friendly competition to create different styles of pots.
