Farmers in Minnesota are waiting to see how much federal aid might come their way.
The Trump administration announced a $12 billion bailout package this week. The majority will fund the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farmer Bridge Assistance program, using the revenue from tariffs to help farmers who have been hurt by tariffs.
Ed Usset, grain marketing specialist at the Center for Farm Financial Management and U of M Extension professor, joined Cathy Wurzer on Morning Edition Wednesday to share how tariffs have affected farm country, and whether this relief would be sufficient.
“The price of soybeans took a big hit this harvest season,” Usset said. “We need the export markets to maintain demand and keep the prices at some sort of a profitable level, and anything we do to damage trade is going to damage prices.”
