Aboul Gheit: The Arab Summit in Baghdad will address priority economic issues for the region.

The Economic and Social Council's ministerial-level meeting kicked off in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Tuesday, as part of preparations for the fifth session of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit.

The meeting opened with a speech delivered by the Minister of Economy and Trade of the Lebanese Republic, Amer Bisat, President of the previous session of the Council, in which he announced the handover of the presidency of the current session to the Republic of Iraq, which will chair it for a period of four years.

He commended Iraq's role in supporting Arab causes, particularly its support for Lebanon during the most difficult circumstances, expressing his confidence in Iraq's ability to lead this session with competence and ability.

For his part, the Minister of Trade of the Republic of Iraq, Atheer Dawood Salman, assumed the presidency of the current session, welcoming the participating Arab delegations to Baghdad in his speech.

In turn, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, congratulated Iraq on assuming the presidency of the current session, wishing it success in leading its work.

In his speech, he pointed to the rapid developments witnessed by the Arab economy, stressing the importance of reaching a unified Arab vision that enhances regional cooperation and supports market stability.

Aboul Gheit explained that Arab countries are capable of achieving a better economic reality if they adopt an approach of partnership and integration.

The Secretary-General also pointed to the positive transformations taking place in Iraq, stressing that the summit agenda will address economic and development issues of priority to the region.
