No Sleep for a week... great concern in Israel due to Trump's moves
5/15/2025
The Hebrew newspaper "Israel Hayom" revealed what it called the "horror scenario" that is terrifying Israel these days: US President Donald Trump may sign a surprise agreement with Iran before leaving the region.
The newspaper linked its prediction to Trump's recent damaging surprises for Israel, including his meeting and agreements with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and the surprise ceasefire agreement with the Houthis.
According to the newspaper, these fears appear to be coming true Thursday morning, with reports that the United States is closer than ever to an agreement that may not meet Israel's security needs.
Trump appears intent on returning with a major political coup from his visit to the Gulf, and Israelis fear that an agreement with Iran could be the prize Trump is hoping for.
The newspaper noted that the options on the table, from Israel's perspective, are not good. On the one hand, an agreement could provide Iran with protection from ongoing attacks and preserve its nuclear achievements, while Israel would be required to respect the agreement signed by the United States and not embarrass the American president.
On the other hand, attacking Iran alone is a dangerous step on the diplomatic level, and will not achieve decisive results regarding Iran's nuclear progress, nor will it sufficiently reverse it.
Israel Hayom pointed to gaps with the United States, not necessarily in rhetoric, as the US president made clear his ambitions within the framework of the agreement, but in Israel's demand to be a more significant part of the process, but its request was rejected.
"We are very close to reaching an agreement with Iran," Trump said earlier today, adding that US demands on the nuclear weapons issue had been "largely met."
The newspaper commented with concern: "What does this mean? The broad outlines of the agreement are what frighten Israel, along with the US president's tendency to seek quick agreements without considering the ramifications for the entire Middle East, the relationship between good and evil, and so on."
The newspaper concluded its assessment by saying, "No wonder Israel hasn't slept well for a week."
