Sunday kicked off the second Latino Business Week in Minneapolis, meant to honor and support local Latino entrepreneurs.
Wilin Castro is one of those entrepreneurs. Originally from Guatemala, the 30-year-old owns Andy’s Garage in the Midtown Global Market. After working at the fast-casual restaurant for years, he took over the business in 2022.
Castro said Latino Business Week is a “huge thing” for him. Running a business is difficult, but these events inspire him to work harder, and he hopes they’ll drive up business.
“I hope we can bring more people. I invite all the people to come to see us and try our breakfast,” Castro said.
Castro recommends the breakfast burrito or the huevos rancheros, though his favorite dish is an omelet full of vegetables and cheese that he makes for himself.
The week will feature cultural events, plus training and networking opportunities for small business owners at places like Midtown Global Market and the Center for Performing Arts.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a press conference at Midtown Global Market Monday that Latino Business Week is more important now than ever.
“When we are in a place where there is so much hatred coming out of our federal government, this is a moment when we can band together,” he said.
Castro agreed that it’s been a stressful time for him recently because of national politics. But the attention on Latino businesses gives him hope.
“This is the moment to be together and to stand together, work hard and support each other.”
Latino business owners told MPR News earlier this year that fear around President Donald Trump’s immigration policies was hurting business.
