A St. Paul man has been charged in connection with a crash during a police pursuit in Minneapolis on Thursday morning that left two women dead and a child injured.
The State Patrol identified the women who died as Marisa Casebolt and Liberty Borg, both 25 years old and from Minneapolis. Court filings state that a 6-year-old boy in their vehicle was hospitalized with fractures to the femur and a traumatic brain injury.
Charges filed in Hennepin County court allege that 45-year-old Troy Payton was driving erratically in Minneapolis in a stolen car. Minneapolis police officers started following him and activated their lights in an attempt to pull him over, but Payton allegedly fled.
Just after 8:30 a.m., he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 55 and Penn Avenue, crashing into the victims’ car.
Casebolt and Borg died at the scene. The 6-year-old was hospitalized at HCMC. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Thursday that he is expected to survive.
Payton faces three felony counts for allegedly causing the women’s deaths and the child’s injuries.
Authorities said they’re continuing to investigate Payton’s alleged carjacking of a vehicle earlier in the day. Police said they received 911 calls just after 8 a.m. reporting a person with a gun near East Lake Street and Fourth Avenue South. Callers reportedly said a man — allegedly Payton — had been driving a vehicle into oncoming traffic and over sidewalks along Lake Street, and later crashed.
Police said he then left the car and pointed a handgun at several people. He allegedly carjacked a woman and fled in her vehicle, firing a gun multiple times, and then drove through downtown and into north Minneapolis while fleeing police before crashing.
Payton’s first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
