Authorities say a man died Tuesday after apparently being swept into Lake Superior by a large wave along the North Shore.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said it happened near Lutsen. Authorities were called to a report of a body in the lake, about 100 feet from shore.

Initial attempts by local first responders to reach the body were turned back by rough water. The U.S. Border Patrol also responded by boat from Grand Marais and was able to recover the body of a 61-year-old man.

His name has not been released.

Authorities learned the man had been staying at a cabin at a property along Highway 61, and was sitting along the shore with another person. After that person went back to the cabin, they saw a large wave knock the man over and pull him into the water.

The sheriff’s office told WTIP radio that the person then called 911 and reported the man was not moving in the water.

Authorities said the man’s body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The case remains under investigation.
