A judge in Benton County sentenced a man on Friday to more than 76 years in prison for shooting five law enforcement officers in October 2023.
In August, after a nine-day trial, a jury convicted 66-year-old Karl Holmberg of attempted murder of a police officer, as well as assault and drug possession.
Holmberg fired at members of the Sherburne County Drug Task Force as they attempted to serve a narcotics search warrant at his rural home near Princeton. Negotiators eventually convinced Holmberg to come outside and arrested him.
His wife told police her husband began shooting blindly through the closed bedroom door and said it was “his day to die.”
All five officers survived. One was hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.
“We are grateful for the judge’s sentence, which ensures that the defendant won’t be able to perpetuate this type of reckless violence again,” Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott stated in a news release Friday.
