Minneapolis police are still looking for a suspect in the deadly shooting of an 11-year-old boy at a park in north Minneapolis.
MPD says the shooting happened at Folwell Park Monday afternoon. First responders tried to save his life, but the boy died from his injuries.
The Rev. Timmy Christopher with Berean Missionary Baptist Church in north Minneapolis called on community members to change the status quo.
"These kids being murdered in the streets, where parents have to recognize them by their shoes, or parents running up thinking that that's their kid, and a father is going and convulsing because he thought that's his kid lying down, that's enough,” Christopher said. “At some point in time, we have to step up and say, let's do something different."
Princess Titus, who lost her own son to gun violence in 2010, expressed frustration and anger during a press conference Thursday. She spoke about the Monday shooting victim police identified as Amir Atkins.
"His voice was silenced before he could even finish the sentence of his life. And as we stand here, we are not just grieving this child. We are grieving generations of loss," Titus said.
She also said the community grieves every individual lost through gun violence.
"Let me say this out loud. This is not normal. This is not acceptable, and this must not continue,” Titus said.
It’s the second deadly shooting at a Minneapolis park this month. In early June, one person died, and five others were injured after a shooting at Boom Island Park in northeast Minneapolis.
Minneapolis Park Police Chief Jason Ohotto joined Minnesota Now to talk about park safety.
