While your Friday after Thanksgiving may be filled leftovers, shopping and naps, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to stop by a state park or recreation area, free of charge.
Friday, Nov. 28 is the last free park entry day of 2025. Each year the DNR offers free entrance to all 75 state parks and recreation areas four days a year. The fee waiver does not cover camping or rentals.
Although a snowstorm covered Minnesota on Wednesday and another could be on the way this weekend, there are still some events park visitors can attend.
Twinkle Light Trail at Itasca State Park from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. An illuminated, multi-use trail for walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. The lights turn on at dusk.
Woodpecker Walk and Talk at Wild River State Park at 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. There are seven woodpecker species in the park, including the rare red-headed woodpecker. Binoculars will be provided.
The Trail Less Traveled at Wild River State Park at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There will be a 2.5-mile hike of rolling terrain and an optional 1.5-mile extension. Meet at the trail center and wear good hiking boots for the snow.
Reptiles Around the World at Lake Maria State Park from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Forget the leftover turkey, learn about reptiles like the legless lizard. Guests will be able to touch a gecko and hold a large boa constrictor.
The fee-free dates in 2026 will be:
Monday, Jan. 19
Saturday, April 25
Saturday, June 13
Friday, Nov. 27
