Drivers, buckle up: It’s going to be another weekend of multiple freeway closures in the Twin Cities.
That includes three freeway closures in St. Paul, along with closures affecting parts of Interstate 694 in the north metro and State Highway 5 in the west Twin Cities region.
Interstates 94 and 35E
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says westbound I-94 will be closed between I-35E and Highway 280 in St. Paul, and southbound I-35E will be closed between University Avenue and Interstate 494.
Both of those closures start at 10 p.m. Friday and run through 5 a.m. Monday. They’re to allow crews to work on bridges over the freeways, part of an ongoing project to repair nine spans.
Traffic on westbound I-94 will be detoured to Highway 36. Traffic on southbound I-35E will be detoured to U.S. Highway 52 for most of the weekend — though separate road work on Highway 52 will force a detour of the detour, to U.S. Highways 10 and 61, from midnight to 5 a.m. Saturday.
U.S. Highway 52
MnDOT says repairs to a damaged pedestrian bridge over U.S. Highway 52 in St. Paul will begin this weekend, forcing a closure of the freeway.
The bridge at Winifred Street has been closed since June 2024, after being struck by an over-height load on northbound Highway 52. Crews will be removing the damaged portion of the bridge this weekend.
Northbound Highway 52 will be closed between the Cesar Chavez Street/Concord Street interchange and I-94 between 10 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday. The southbound lanes in the same area will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m. Saturday. Traffic will be detoured to U.S. Highways 10 and 61.
Interstate 694
More than six miles of eastbound I-694 — between Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center and Snelling Avenue in Arden Hills — will be closed this weekend for maintenance work.
MnDOT says crews will be repairing pavement and bridge decks, removing vegetation and graffiti, and replacing lighting, among other work.
Ramps to and from eastbound I-694 in the construction zone will close at 7 p.m. Friday, with the freeway lanes closing from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.
Traffic will be detoured to highways 610 and 10.
State Highway 5
Both directions of Highway 5 will be closed this weekend between Eden Prairie Road and Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie.
MnDOT says crews will be repairing concrete, paving shoulders and updating guardrails.
The closure runs from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. Traffic will be detoured using highways 41 and 212.
Ongoing lane closures for Highway 5 — and also parts of Highway 212 in the same area — will remain in effect once the highway reopens.
