A Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm dumped several inches of snow across Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday.
Southeastern Minnesota remains under a winter weather advisory as light snow and blustery winds create areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. This includes the Rochester, Winona and Austin area. This is likely to wrap up by noon Sunday.
The National Weather Service reported more than 8 inches of snow in Rochester, 6.5 inches in Chanhassen, more than 5 inches at Duluth International Airport and about 4 inches at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Other snow totals from around the state:
Blue Earth, 12 inches
Winnebago, 9.8 inches
Winona, 9 inches
Rochester, 8.5 inches
Preston, 8 inches
New Ulm, 7.5 inches
Albert Lea, 7 inches
Mankato, 7 inches
Rosemont, 6.5 inches
Bloomington, 5.8 inches
Two Harbors, 5.7 inches
Minneapolis, 5.2 inches
Chisago City, 4.4 inches
Fridley, 3.8 inches
Lake City, 1.5 inches
Ashby, 1.5 inches
Nisswa, 1 inch
This storm brings the metro area closer to the November snowfall average, according to Mandy Thalhuber, an MPR meteorologist.
“For the Twin Cities, about 6.8 inches is normal November snowfall, and we’re at seven inches. So you know, surprise, it all came in the last week of November, but we’re at least around average for snowfall,” Thalhuber said.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported more than 500 crashes and spinouts on Saturday.
“This is a very slow-moving system,” Thalhuber said. “It was in Missouri yesterday. It’s parked over Chicago right now, so very slow to exit system that has been affecting us this weekend, just taking its time.”
The storm forced the cancellation of Cirque Musica Holiday Wonderland in Grand Forks on Sunday and prompted Minneapolis and St. Paul to declare snow emergencies. Parking rules vary in the two cities.
In Minneapolis:
From 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, to 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, do not park on either side of a Snow Emergency route until 8 a.m. or until the street is fully plowed.
From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, do not park on the even-numbered side of a non-Snow Emergency route until 8 p.m. or until that side of the street is fully plowed, or on either side of a parkway until 8 p.m. or until the parkway is fully plowed.
In St. Paul, beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday, do not park on Night Plow Routes, which include all of downtown and streets with signs posted “Night Plow Route” and “Night Plow Route This Side of Street.”
Beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday in St. Paul, all Day Plow Routes will be plowed. Do not park on Day Plow Routes. Day Plow Routes are not marked by signs. If there are no Night Plow signs posted within the block, then consider it a Day Plow Route.
