Officials at Isle Royale National Park are investigating after two people were found dead at a remote backcountry campground.
The deaths were first reported to park officials on Sunday afternoon on the Lake Superior island off the northeast corner of Minnesota.
Rangers hiked 11 miles overnight and reached the campground early Monday, where they confirmed the two deaths. Additional park personnel then responded to the campground by ground and air.
Authorities have not identified the two people; as of Tuesday morning, park officials said their causes of death were not yet known.
Authorities also did not say where in the park the two people were found.
The national park includes the main island of Isle Royale — about 50 miles long and 9 miles wide — as well as dozens of smaller, nearby islands. It’s only accessible by boat or seaplane. The park includes 165 miles of trails and 36 campgrounds, some along the Lake Superior shore and others along inland lakes or creeks.
Last summer, a backpacker from Michigan died from medical complications while hiking in the park.
