Authorities in Mankato continue to investigate a fire early Monday that left two children dead and a woman seriously injured.

The fire was reported around 2 a.m. Monday in the upstairs unit of a building at 233 1/2 Bradley Street, just south of downtown Mankato. Public safety officials said flames were visible when first responders arrived.

Authorities said two children died in the fire. A woman in the apartment was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital for treatment. A man and another child escaped the upstairs unit without physical injuries. Residents of the downstairs apartment were also unharmed.

The names of the victims have not been released. The Mankato Free Press reported that the injured woman was the mother of the two children who died.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, especially at the start of the new school year,” Mankato Director of Public Safety Jeremy Clifton said in a news release. “We are working to determine the cause and will support those affected in any way we can.”

The State Fire Marshal is assisting local agencies in the investigation. Authorities said the fire does not appear to be intentional.
